Carolinas HealthCare System to Invest In Facility Improvements
and Overall Enhancements to Patient Care and Services
Albemarle, NC -- July 11, 2013—The Board of Directors of Stanly Health Services has approved transferring ownership of the health system to Carolinas HealthCare System. The vote was taken at a called meeting of the board last evening. The current management services agreement between Stanly Health Services and Carolinas HealthCare System, in effect since 2009, will be cancelled and the new relationship will become effective October 1, 2013, subject to approval by the Carolinas HealthCare System Board of Commissioners.
“Stanly Health Services and Carolinas HealthCare System have developed a strong relationship over the past four years,” said Michael Tarwater, CEO of Carolinas HealthCare System. “Our organizations share similar missions and complementary visions, deepened by our shared commitment to provide the highest quality healthcare services to the Stanly community. The residents of Stanly County can be very proud of the high quality medical services available to them through the physicians and other providers at facilities of SHS.”
As part of the ownership agreement Carolinas HealthCare System agrees to invest $70 million over 12 years to improve and enhance patient care services and facilities within Stanly Health Services for the benefit of the people of Stanly County and the surrounding areas. Projects contemplated include improvements to the information technology system, expansion of the intensivist program at Stanly Regional Medical Center, improvements to and expansion of the emergency department from 18 to 28 beds, upgrades and enhancements to patient rooms, and development of an urgent care center in Albemarle.
“As board members, our top priority is to ensure the long-term sustainability of our organization so we can continue to provide healthcare services of the highest quality well into the future,” said Larry Baucom, Stanly Health Services Board Chairman. ”Extensive due diligence and evaluation went into this decision and the board believes that formally becoming a part of Carolinas HealthCare System is in the best interests of our patients, our employees, our physicians and our community. In this time of tumultuous change in healthcare we are now aligning our two systems to meet future challenges and opportunities.”
As part of the agreement, Carolinas HealthCare System will also assess medical staff needs and will work to recruit needed physicians to Stanly County, including specialists. Two members of the current Stanly Health Services Board of Directors will be appointed to a new SHS board, and the remainder will be appointed by Carolinas HealthCare System to a newly created advisory council.
